We have previously posted about the vandalism on the Iris credit card reader and the new steel cover that we have to protect this reader. Now we are getting calls from customers that are having vandals use hammers, rocks, etc. to break the outside acrylic sheet that we install in the windows. The acrylic is easily broken because it is thin and brittle, but the 3/8” polycarbonate in the window behind the acrylic is standing up very well and providing the security. It just gets “messed up” when the acrylic is not there to protect it. The design for the window is working just it was conceived, but sometimes it is necessary to replace one or both. In all cases the vandal was not able to get into the vendor; just make extra work and cost for everyone to repair the damage.

If just the acrylic in a full size vendor needs to be replaced the cheapest way to do it is to buy it locally at a glass shop or a plastics company; wrapping and shipping a piece of acrylic is costly. If they hit a ShurVend VendPro-18 Junior FL or RL in-the-wall vendor, we can UPS these to you at a reasonable price.

Jim when I had your units I replaced the acrylic with laminated or tempered glass mainly because they withstood continuous cleaning without scratching. It isn't as cheap as plexiglass but the laminated would be a real tough to get through.

I was thinking the same thing - I saw a new vendor someone put in, and within two days some idiot took a Bic lighter to the Lexan and burned a big spot in it. Not only that but with the double-glass inside from it being refrigerated and a third layer of acrylic, if the sun is up you can hardly see what's in the vendor from all the glare.

Laminated Glass & Reflections

cfcw,

I have installed laminated glass in some of the vendors I have sold at the request of the buyer and it seemed to have worked for them. Never heard anything about breaking in. As you say it is more expensive but it can be done. In my early days when you had the vendors I may not have had acrylic in front of the polycarbonate, but now every vendor has both. The acrylic is there just to protect the polycarbonate which is the security.

MEP,

The standard refrigerated vendor comes from the factory with only polycarbonate to protect the dual pane glass window. Polycarbonate will get damaged easily with fire, hammers, or rocks. As for the glare and reflections this is a common thing when the vendor is placed outside without a shade or canopy over it; the multi-panes of glass/polycarbonate creates many reflections and it is very hard to see through to the product. Much of the reflection is caused because the vendor has very little lighting inside; the standard vendor has only one fluorescent tube at the top. The new ShurVend LED lighting kit creates light on both sides and the top of the window; this helps light the products and reduces the effect of the glare. My customers who have retrofit older vendors have been very pleased with the "new look" as have their customers. The sales in the vendor increases according to some of my customers.
