Yes, yes, yes!!!! The credit card system we use has had a name change again and is now called NAYAX. To remind everyone, the InOne credit card system we use was first called ARROW, then it was IRIS, and now it is NAYAX. That is too many changes in 3 years, but that is what it is. There was a recent change of ownership, so new people make changes!! It is hard to keep up with it since those of us in the real world are never told about these until after the fact.

Now that the iPhone 6 has been delivered with a new operating system that includes Apple Pay, all mobile pay systems will be going in the same direction-- Apple’s way. Apple has a huge base of phones that have been sold, so mobile payments by iPhone, smart cards, and NFC readers are going to be the new norm. We just got our first NAYAX system which has the capability of accepting mag stripe, smart cards with a chip in them, and the wireless NFC systems all designed into one reader. The formats for all these different systems have not been unified, but it will not take long to get everybody on the same wavelength. There was a recent post on the forum about these “EMV” systems (which have been used in Europe, Japan and Australia for years) so many changes are going to be made very quickly.

We are installing 3 of these new units on vendors in the next few weeks, so ShurVend is on the cutting edge of this technology. When we do install these units, we are also installing a steel guard around the plastic reader to help prevent vandalism by hammer. It has happened to us in the past, so we are providing some protection. We can’t cover the reader completely because of all different payment options, but we do what we can.

We can envision the day when all the bays, vacuums, and vending machines, etc. in a carwash site will be equipped with readers that accept cashless payments and very little cash is needed. That will indeed cut down on vandalism of equipment since there is very little “cash” to go after. We have been questioned by prospective customers this year whether our vendors will operate on credit card or mobile payment usage only. Our answer to that is “Yes we do!” At this time we would not recommend that any of our vendors go cashless only; we think that the vendor should have a coin changer installed along with the cashless system for two reasons. (1) Many washes are located where the demographics of the customer base use cash almost exclusively and (2) The inclusion of the coin changer along with the credit card system will allow those who have converted to token use in their wash to continue doing that and still gain the benefits of the cashless option. If a cashless system and coin changer is installed, we would eliminate the bill validator in the vendor, so the net cost of a credit card system and changer would not be much more than the standard bill validator/coin changer combination. (Right now we are installing a bill validator and a cashless system in two vendors and eliminating the changer in both machines per the customer’s decision) So you can go either way at the same cost.

Uncle Sam,

This just from my perspective ... so as usual I expect everyone to take it with a grain of salt. Because we also have a laundromat where to be consistent on each piece of equipment ... there could be a need to over hundred of these new EMV compliant card swipes or Apple Pay NFC interfaces. In other words for some of us ... it seems that a reliable ATM with dual $5s & $1 goldie coins options to be dispensed could be the best fit. As far as security ... there really does not have to be any difference between the ability to have an "in the extra secure wall" ATM vs a similarly installed ChangeMaker. For some really tough areas ... I agree that 100% cashless could help cut down on some vandalism etc.

Currently have an eport on my vending machine. Are these readers proprietary to shurvend, or will they retrofit to most vending machines?

BBE,

These readers are very similar to the ePort and are not proprietary to ShurVend. They will fit all modern vending machines that run with the latest software.
