Is there a downside to going with a digital type controller other than possibly longevity. They have all the temp ranges that I want and actually cost less.

The mechanical ones work without power, otherwise the digital one should be just as good.

We don't regret going the digital route. Independent Energy in RI is where we got about seven nifty controllers & they are still functioning perfectly since about 1990. I notice they may have updated or discontinued what they offered then but it seems that other brands might be just as capable with a hopefully nifty LCD readouts like mine .... not sure.
