Water Softener Brine Tank

After reading this, it almost sounds like they were selling rock salt as solar crystals.

Diamond has pellets that are pretty clean, but nowhere near as clean as Morton.

Good brine tanks are built to hold a lot of salt so you don't have to dump a bag in after every regeneration. I've always been able to fill it once a month or so and have never had issues with pellets clumping.

I have been using the Morton's Super Saver 2 from Sam's Club for 5 years now, keep my brine tank pretty full and have not had any issues with clumping or blockages. Can't beat the price either.

The service guy said it can be an issue when there is a long time between regins like I have. If I put 2 bags of salt in, some of it is submerged in water for over a month. This will cause the pellets to dissolve and turn to mush...He said the Solar salt is less likely to do that since it is a rock or crystal form and not compressed and formed like Mortons...BTW, I gave $4.47 for a 40# bag of the solar salt...So the price is comparable...He said it would work better for me since I only regin every other week or longer during slow times. If you have harder water than me, say 15-20 grains, you'll regin a lot sooner than me and you'll never experience the "mush" issue....

The pellets won't dissolve to mush in a couple weeks. It only takes about 15 minutes for the water to become saturated, at which point the pellets just stop dissolving. The only time I've ever seen them break down or clump up and form a bridge above the brine is if the softener is left sitting for years.

Its interesting what you experience is totally the opposite from what I experience with the same thing!

I hate to admit it, but I may have been wrong about the solar salt. After using only 80 lbs, I stopped using it. Looking at the salt in the bag, as you can see from the picture, it looks very clean in the bag. But after putting it in the tank, it gets this dirty foam that lays on top of the water...I let it cycle through a regin at the end of its capacity and got the same results. Even taking a small tight mesh fish net to clean off the scum, the water still looked dirty.

This solar salt may be fine and may be the characteristic of it, but I decided to switch back to Mortons...The water instantly cleared up and no more scummy foam or dirty looking water....Sorry if I led anyone astray!

That's the same thing I'd see - if you run it long enough the brine smells like a shrimp farm.
