I am looking for a weed killer that kills everything and last more than 3 weeks. I currently use round up but it seems in 4-5 weeks everything comes back to life. Has anyone found something better and maybe cheaper?

Cross bow
Go to a Farm Store and buy Cross Bow and mix it with Roundup. I used that on my acreage to kill blackberrys; thistles; crab grass and just about everything else you can think of. It last over one year.
How much you buy, a quart or gallon depends on how much area you have to spray.

I use roundup, it works fine for me. I do use the concentrate and mix it a little stronger than they recommend, maybe 25% stronger.
Are you sure its the same weeds coming back, and not "new" weeds growing? roundup only kills existing herbaceous plants, it is not a pre-emergent - ie it doesnt prevent new weeds from growing.
Crossbow is a brush killer, its purpose is to kill "woody" brush, such as blackberrys, poison ivy, etc.

The active ingredient in this product is glyphosate (common brand name "RoundUp"). Name brand versions contain 18% glyphosate and this product contains 41%. This product is also half the price.

I do not think this product is a peremergent but it does work better than other products I have used. It is also one of the few products I buy at Walmart.

I have had really good luck with ground Clear under $20 gallon at lowes- Gr Clear, is concentrated or comes premixed. another chemical that really kills is unleaded gas only $3.55 a gallon---Yes i know its not right, but is burning it and blowing the fumes out my exhaust perfect either, especially my 2 cycle weed trimmer.
The ratio I used was 50% Crossbow and 50% Roundup, diluted as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Crossbow is a "big-time" killer my son-in-law who works for the Oregon Highway Dept suggested it because they use it on the sides of roads, etc to keep weeds and growth down. It may not even need the Roundup, but I thought it would not hurt to mix, and as I said the wide variety of weeds I have on my acreage stay dead for 1.5 years. I was happy with the results.

I found this homemade weed killer recipe attached to a review of quikpro on amazon:
2. The most inexpensive herbicide is to mix a "home made solution" from cheap household products. For killing grass and sterilizing the soil as well, I mix a quarter cup of liquid laundry detergent and 2.0 pounds of salt in a gallon of water. DO NOT USE POWDER DETERGENT, it clogs up the sprayer.
. . . . .CASH AND CARRY of Seattle sells a 50 pound bag of salt at $5.90, and COSTCO sells a 1.3 gallon container of ECO LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT at $13.89.
. . . . .This $0.32/gallon solution is applied via a hand-pump sprayer. The detergent removes the shiny protective waxy layer of the vegetation and forces it to quickly absorb the toxic solution. The detergent is also sticky. As a result, the salt sticks to the plant during drying. You can see the crystals of it on the blades of grass during a sunny day.

I have an area that is covered in Japanese Knotweed at my house that I am going to try this on.

Eric, The salt + detergent solution does not work for poison ivy, I know because I tried it 30 years ago. (I have a wickedly severe allergic reaction to poison ivy, I eradicate it whenever possible!) Might work on grass & weeds though, I dont know, never tried that.
I can also report that the 50 lb salt blocks we put out for the deer do not kill much grass, but we dont add soap to those because we have clean deer
But over the course of having salt blocks in the same place for a few years, it will slowly kill any trees within about a 25' radius, so we're a little careful where we put them.

I had a friendly customer donate a couple truckloads of landscaping debris behind my wash by the stream 2 or 3 years ago, it included some invasive weed that is spreading like crazy, none of the poisons I've sprayed is killed it.
Perhaps "crossbow" is my answer... I think I might give it a try. Thanks for the additional info.
I read the info on cross bow and is says "has no effect on grasses". Grass is one of the weeds I wish to kill?

Use a chemical soil sterilizer. Years ago I got a product called “Permatrol” from my local feed store and used it next to a fence line. I don’t know how long it lasts, but the ground was still bear when I sold the house a few years later.

I find that a hand held sprayer won't deliver enough product to do a good job at completely killing an area. When I used a 30 gallon sprayer that a friend let me borrow, Round Up did the trick. I had been hand spraying the same area with poor results for several years.

I am not licensed to use herbicides and nothing following should be considered advice. It is only my personal understanding of things as I have heard them around the water tank.
Pramitol is sold at the farm store. It is a total vegetation and soil killer. It is used for open areas with no chance for drainage on to an area that you want plants. Mostly used for parking lots. If you use it in a lot that drains to a field, it will kill everything where the water drains including 200 year old trees. Very effective. Very dangerous. Use only as allowed by law. It is absorbed through the soil and will remain in the soil for a long time after use.
Crossbow is great for killing woody plants. It will only kill woody plants. I have been told that Crossbow is what the energy companies use under power line to keep only grass growing there. It has no effect on grass. I have seen it sprayed in brushy areas and the area quickly became lawn. It will have no effect on grasses. I understand that it is only absorbed through foliage and not through roots.
