What in the world is this thing?

I've just bought an older wash and I'm doing some repairs and upgrades. Does anyone know what these boxes are around the wand holder?

Good question! Never seen one before....Take the lid off, it might give you a clue what it does! Just a WAG, if you recycle weep water, it might be a protective enclosure for the return pipe or a box to cover up a very big hole in the wall!

I second opening it up and posting some pictures.

First thing I noticed was what appear to be some sharp edges on the cover for that thing and some on the wand holder also.

They might have had trouble with people breaking the wand holders and tried to protect them, or they're artistic embellishment.
