What is a "profile post"?

I have seen this new "profile post" section ever since the new forum format came about. What is its purpose? I notice some are posting on there and based on the messages probably thinking they are sending a private message. If it does not have any real purpose then maybe Jackson can turn off that feature.

It's like your own personal thread within your profile that anyone can read and reply to. You're definitely right that some people confuse it with a private message.
