What would you do?

I'd replace the hose and scrape the paint out of the vac like I've done a dozen times before.

Are you able to identify and contact the vehicle owner? If so, I would contact them and ask to pay for the damages (vacuum filters, hose, nozzle and cleanup). Be prepared for "there isn't a sign that says not to suck up paint".

We've all been through this....Concrete, paint, and the old couple that sucked up the spilled driveway sealer into a vacuum at my newly remodeled wash! I haven't been able to get the sealer off of the vac island where they left the lid to the sealer FACE DOWN on the top of the new concrete.

Clean it up, go home and pour a nice glass of whiskey, and then yell at a family member when they make some insignificant mistake later tonight.

Man guys I would go off the deep end on the customer if I was there in person. Send them a invoice and take it to small claims court if you really wanted too. I hope you charge at least $1.25-$1.50 for your vacs to deter people like this and if a customer ask why you went up explain this situation. I had a guy vacuuming a boat live well once water was coming out the dome and that's when I put in New vacs and went to $1.50 sorry this happend hopefully it didn't get on the exterior stainless.
