I have a great employee moving on to a new job soon and, as usual, it is bittersweet. This one was a real people-person, mature and responsible at age 22. He lost his Dad a couple years back, which made him more mature, I think.

I will miss this guy. He was one of the few I have thought could take over this business as part of my succession plan. With him gone, I will need to amend the plan. Amending the succession plan is normal and necessary from time to time, so this isn't too troubling.

Everything changes and people must make their own decisions. Boys grow into men and men choose their own life path. To all the great employees that have come and gone: I wish you well!

I feel for you man. I owned a liquor store and night club, and what a nightmare it was to find trust worthy and reliable people. I'm guessing once I'm into my wash here, I'll be a one man show for at least a year until I learn the ins-and-outs of everything.

Good luck finding his replacement

Learn the ins and outs in a year?
Good luck.
I've been doing this 20 years. Still a one man show and learning new tips and tricks.
I do it all except the lawn maintenance and snow plowing.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, or perhaps I worded poorly what I meant. Hopefully in a year I know enough about my wash that I can train someone to work there. Not to replace me, but rather relieve to tend to my other businesses.

Waxman, was there any way you could have persuaded him to stay or was he just leaving the business to pursue other interests?

I think he has lived around here for his whole life and he is ready to relocate.

I do not think money is the issue but we did discuss ways he could earn more if he comes back.

I told him if he doesn't like the new job ( reconditioning trade ins at a new car dealer ) he can come back and work for me any time.

He’s young, only 22. He’ll learn real fast that the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the street. Who knows he might come back with his tail between his legs wanting to come back after a couple of months.

Doubt he will like working at a dealership. When it is slow they give you other things to do. Let us know how it comes out.

we've got a really nice detail shop here; bright and clean. well-organized. low stress. air tools ( typhoon guns, tornadors, pneumatic carpet brushes). good employees. free coffee and water and bagels every day. car wash, used car sales, apartment building. plenty of room to advance. when an employee shows initiative, it is rewarded.
