SW Indiana melon fields.
Yesterday a man that frequently delivers to my wash told my manager that he was looking for a part time job and would like to work there. She told him that we didn't need anyone but would keep him in mind if things changed. He then felt the need to add "I done done my jail time, paid all my fines, and got my license back." I think he may have taken that quote from the book, "How not to get the job."

Reminds me of a saying my dad had printed in his office. "Sampson killed 1000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, everyday a million sales are killed the same way".

That's why in interviewing prospective employees I learned to ask open-ended questions. They will always tell you more than you wanted to know, and in some cases tell you things you can't directly ask about by law.

Gotta love cases like that. I once had an interviewee answer the question "why did you leave your last position" by replying "cause they made me work hard and do the sh*t they didnt want to do. It was bullsh*t." I had to stop the interview and give him feedback on how not to act in an interview.

I always hate it when the first questions they ask are how many sick days and vacation pay they get. Not a good sign.

Reminds Me of This Other Guy...

Your story reminded me of this walk-in who wanted to work part-time, couldn't stop putting down his previous car wash owner boss and then he concluded his tirade saying, "And I don't steal!"

First thing I thought of was, "If you say you don't steal, you probably DO steal because who puts that on their "resume" as a great qualifier that you 'don't steal'.

"Red flagged" this guy in my mind to NEVER work for me ever...

This reminds me of something the other way around. I was collecting money for a guy that had a video machine route. I had done it for a few years and he sold out. I "interviewed" with the new guy. He asked me "How much did you steal"? I answered that I hadn't stolen a quarter, and he replies, "you are a fool". I stood up and said that I wasn't interested in working for him. He freaks and tries to apologize but I walked.

The end result is that he defaulted on the purchase and the guy took back a real mess.
