Ok, How about I split the difference with you. I continue to accept quarters in my vacs but swap out my change machine with a bill changer. So at least I am not an enabler. ???
do whatever you want; i am not against you; i am FOR you! i want you to take in as much $$$ as possible!!! you run your business the way it works best for you. the way mine works best is to: take cc/quarters/ tokens in ss bays, tokens/quarters in vacs and cc/cash, quarters/tokens in iba.

i want to make as much as possible here.

Waxman, Ever played the slots in Vegas? 10 years ago or more versus a couple of years ago? In the bigger casinos slots that take quarters are difficult to impossible to find. Trend?
casino business is not what i understand. the total i have ever put into slots in my life is less than $100. you assume a trend for casinos = a trend for carwashes. not sold.

for me it's best to take quarters but not vend them; i vend tokens. walk on quarters is still significant to me, so why should i care about a trend at casinos??? should i put a big waterfall or pirate ship out front of my wash too? nah.

Waxman I never thought you were against me! I appreciate your input and everyone's input on here that's why I asked the question. I am just thinking people are stuck in the rut of paying for Vacs with quarters, so that is why they do it. We are all creatures of habit. I just don't think they will leave because they can't pay with quarters. Or at the very least can't turn their dollars into quarters to then just put them into the Vac.

There was a time when the average Coke machine accepted nickels, dimes, and quarters and a drink was a quarter or less. Now that drink is typically over a buck. The (newer) machines still take quarters, but also bills and often c/c, yep, make it easy for someone to spend $

thing is.. there aren't 29 coke machines lined up in a parking lot. and each coke machine doesn't take in thousands of quarters every week that need to be processed and accounted for. what I'm saying is that this is much easier from the operator's POV, while at the same time not affecting the customer too much. we completely switched over in september and have seen maybe 10 people complain (which isn't to say that there are others who were upset and didn't complain). to me this is worth it. a business owner should always be looking for ways to cut down on hours and be more efficient so as to focus on bigger issues at hand. if we have customers that walk away from a $5 car wash just because we dont accept quarters - then maybe thats a problem customer that we dont want anyway. . .

This page is all about our own thoughts and opinions. One thing I know is if I was close to you I would tell you what a "GREAT IDEA THAT IS" then i would go back down the street to my wash and put up a big sign saying "We will happily accept your quarters and ANY other currency here" Dont get me wrong I would love to only handle bills and CC. But I want any money coming in that people have!! I love $100 bills!! I love to collect them, But not many people carry them!!! So I will happily take a bucket of $800-$1000 to the penny machine at TD and they will hand me a stack of new $100 bills!! Easy peasy!! I gotta go there anyway.. Just my opinion!!!

i've actually heard alot of news stories about casinos being far less profitable than they used to be.

i think you're comparison is off base. you're somehow equating car wash sales to gambling sales and i just don't think you can draw that straight of a line between the two. heck, why not throw in booze and prostitution while we're at it?

a slot machine is different from a ss car wash meter box.

I will continue to accept their quarters all day long but I will have all my machines be able to accept bills (my Vacs already do). I will eliminate my change machine and put in a bill changer. So if a customer happens to come in with a pocket full of quarters, fine I will be more than happy to accept them. But I just don't see the need to turn their bills into quarters just so they can go put them into my vac that accepts the same dollar bills they just put into my change machine. I see this happen all day long. This is an unneeded extra step for them and me.
Just FYI I am a exterior car wash with a cashier so I am only talking about my vacuums and vending machines.

A bill breaker and all machines accepting bills, quarters, and possibly dollar coins is a good plan, IMO.
I think it is a good idea to give people the opportunity to spend money at the wash the way it is most convenient for them, not the operator.

I. Never said they were equal.

2. I look at everything when viewing succesful business, particularly those that are masters at getting $ out of the customers pockets and into the business, and compare it to the Car Wash Business.

3. I guess you know some casinos I don't, the ones that offer prostitution.

4. There are some movie theaters now offering alchoholic beverages.

4. A meter box is different because you always get something. So then you are less likely to put in more $?

I like the idea of changing my bill changers from vending out 4 quarters to vending out dollar coins, either the coin or token.
I'm not a fan of only having my bay price start in $1 increments ($1, $2, $3 starts). Verses $2.25, $2.50 or $2.75 to start.
If the start time is in quarter increments and the changers vending $1 coins or tokens and the customer does not have quarters with them they must use either the dollars they have or the changer, thus they are forced to put in more money to start then if they use quarters only.

Just thinking out loud. There is a local amusement company & on most of their machines they have 2 coin acceptors wired in parallel. If one acceptor gets jammed with a bent coin ... the game machine is still pretty much just as usable saving downtime on let say a busy afternoon for them.

My reasoning for suggesting this is that if & when the dollar coin finally becomes the workhorse of the coins instead of just quarters ... some of us may want to opt to using the space that would be required for a bill acceptor on our vacuums for another coin acceptor wired in parallel for the "busy no downtime acceptable afternoon" redundancy factor. If the bill verifiers for whatever reason in our bays become too expensive to buy & maintain ... this could be an alternative there also! Although ... I get such a high percentage of customers using $5 bills now in my six bays ... we would almost have to advocate for $5 coins like other countries have or are moving to!

I could see 2 Bill acceptors in Parallel . Perhaps even side by side in the same box.

FWIW, I see not dispensing quarters as a good idea (I hate stocking a changer just for people to drive up to get quarters for their laundry) but I doubt I'd ever stop accepting quarters unless people stopped bringing them in.

that's what i do. i only dispense the dollar tokens and accept tokens, quarters, cc in bays. tokens and quarters in vacs and everything in auto cashier.

seems to work out well for me.
