I would be more concerned about the water leaking than the sound changing. Water is not good. Mine will pump loudly and then hesitate, and pump quietly, on occasion. They all last a couple years min. Keep the moisture out of the air lines and carry a spare!
I have several Rheem in service since 2010. Takagi also, but 1 of those failed in 4 years. Leaking primary heat exchanger but covered under warranty. All for the most part dependable units.
You might be peeking a little. Use a blindfold and see how it turns out. Even AI makes mistakes. Many of us here build and install, we just live it, try not to brag, and help others.
Super busy last 2 days and I had similar issues with 1 of my 2 tanks. My problem was 1 valve was leaking. I didn't hear the leak because of the constant noise in the equipment room. I keep a spare valve disc kit on hand for that reason. 34 year old Ecowater system that will likely get replaced...
