I would be more concerned about the water leaking than the sound changing. Water is not good. Mine will pump loudly and then hesitate, and pump quietly, on occasion. They all last a couple years min. Keep the moisture out of the air lines and carry a spare!

Stainless is great. Extruded Aluminum, if good quality, will also last a long time. Have seen some in use 15 years and still in good shape.
