I would be more concerned about the water leaking than the sound changing. Water is not good. Mine will pump loudly and then hesitate, and pump quietly, on occasion. They all last a couple years min. Keep the moisture out of the air lines and carry a spare!
I have several Rheem in service since 2010. Takagi also, but 1 of those failed in 4 years. Leaking primary heat exchanger but covered under warranty. All for the most part dependable units.
