You can't. That's why I stuck with the preauth. I only know it happens because people will call complaining that the wash didn't start, or it started and shut down right after. When I tell them it checks to see if the card has $15.25, I get answers like "oh, I only have $4 on that card".

Never had an issue with it falling, just let it be. I don't think heat would be good for it, would be an extreme temp change in a short amount of time.
