    Solo Or Team Bottom-Line

As one who started solo, the team approach is far less taxing once training and qc issues are addressed. However, the potential for increased production has never really come to fruition. Two cars in a day for 2-3 techs was about all we could comfortably manage without cutting corners. There's a...

    Credit Card Fees

CC fees should be considered a cost of doing business. I avoid a local gas station since they started tacking on $.04-.06/gal. for the privilege of using a cc which I find important for keeping track of deductible expenses. Regardless of volume, I would recommend internet processors such as...

    In-Bay and Vac Station Lights

I have changed my bay 120v metal halide wallpaks to CFL's based on the conversion lamps sold by KleenRite. Broke two or three in the process; at $30 a bulb, it's going to delay payback, but I feel better when they burn on rainy or snowy nights. I also had 400w MH on 16' poles on the vac islands...

Hot water rinse in self serve bay as an option

I would think they would ask/benefit more from a hot water wash. We do temper our rinse water when the ambient temp goes below 20. I personally get frustrated when the rinse ad soap are freezing on the surface. Also curious whose soap is providing good cold water bite? MC

    A New Touchless Option

Ric, It seems that a small "ramp" could sandwich a surface pipe and act as a speed bump as well. Most people fly over the underflush and get minimal benefit from it.

    Automatic Doors

We put the Airlift XRS in before last winter and couldn't be happier with it. Considered the Wyndstar also, but chose Airlift for three reasons: Voltage, Airlift had a 120V option; their speed slightly faster with at 120V; emergency release mechanism from outside was smoother. No chain involved...

    Reclaim Tanks

Is this the first pumping or the first incidence of odor? I assume a local septic pumper did the work and backflushed the tanks several times. I would add a gallon of bleach to each tank after pumping to sanitize. If you have media tanks, and ozonation isn't readily feasible, you might try...

    oil in pit

Too funny, Jamie! I've used a shop vac to skim and then added cat litter.

    FYI: Aquamatic Valve Problem

Here's one for the knowledge base: The 2" back wash valve on my year old reclaim unit failed last week, so all of the water was being recirculated and none going to the wash tank. Thank God for rainy days! The problem was obvious as it happens whenever air is interrupted going to the valve...

    Pyramid validators

I'm not familiar with them either. Can they be retrofitted into a Hamilton DRS? Does inexpensive translate into problematic or a good value? What's the maintenance protocol? Am I being overly cheap or is $150-$200 per unit for a tune-up every 12 - 18 mos. excessive? Alternatives? Thanks MC

Relax and share with your wife

Thanks, Bill. I hope to be married long enough for "relax" and "wife" to be linked in the same sentence! :D

    Minimum charge for credit cards

Two bucks is awfully low given the fees associated with cards. Is this for the minimum self-serve time or token sale or how is used? What is the average amount spent per card transaction? We don't offer cc use in bays, but if a customers asks to swipe a card for cash to use in the bays, it's a...

    Chain and Roller life

We switched to Vaughan Industries' rollers over two years ago. Quieter and less weight than steel. Less chain wear? It has still needed adjustment but it was five years old at the time so the wear had begun. SC 78 is a good chain, full 1/4" thick. Pain to adjust, but not the end of the world. MC

    Using reclaim water for weep?

This is definitely the way to go; conserves water, helps aerate the system. You may want to warn that weep rinsing will result in spotting. MC

    Peco Flex Wrap Question

Has anybody had success rebuilding the flex joints on these? At $665.00 there must be an alternative. Thanks. MC

    Desiderio vapor steamer

I bought one a couple of years ago this July. Worked great until the 1 year warranty expired. The switches are problematic and frequently the vacuum does not start. Customer service won't sell parts for field replacement. $150 to replace the hose w/switches, but if it's a poor design, what's...

    scheduling software

Check out Genbook.com. Cost is reasonable and we get appts. at all hours of the day and especially night when the shop is closed. Chose the credit card capture mode and you won't have a problem with no shows. MC

    replacing a LW4000

Have you checked with your PDQ distributor for a refurbed unit. There are certainly technological benefits to going new if the site supports it but it's not cheap. Was in Vegas and Wash World has an impressive looking replacement. Price was well in the 70s as I recall. Didn't price the Laser or...

    Remove/replace vac door gaskets

Either of these removal methods work well. I replace mine with rubber foam weather seal from Lowe's or Home Depot. MC
