you have hit the mail on the head, stainless holds up where bronze material used in the cat plunger pump is cheaper and makes machining cheaper, they would have a superior pump if in the head area had stainless, after market repair use stainless, also plunger pumps have not be around for 40 years, piston pumps have been around 40 years ago.I'm sure it's not a "design problem" or they wouldn't still be making the pump after more than 40 years.
Can you post a picture of the plumbing setup?
As I mentioned earlier, the 623 can't suffer from head washout the way a plunger pump can because wherever cavitation can occur the parts are stainless steel. Also there's only one inlet so there's no chance of plumbing it in a way that the water flow through the pump can change direction.
