I'm sure it's not a "design problem" or they wouldn't still be making the pump after more than 40 years.

Can you post a picture of the plumbing setup?

As I mentioned earlier, the 623 can't suffer from head washout the way a plunger pump can because wherever cavitation can occur the parts are stainless steel. Also there's only one inlet so there's no chance of plumbing it in a way that the water flow through the pump can change direction.
you have hit the mail on the head, stainless holds up where bronze material used in the cat plunger pump is cheaper and makes machining cheaper, they would have a superior pump if in the head area had stainless, after market repair use stainless, also plunger pumps have not be around for 40 years, piston pumps have been around 40 years ago.

Cat has been making the 530 pump for 40 years. Plunger pumps have been around even longer.

You could have bought 530 pumps with stainless inserts for about $50 more.

cat does not offer 530 stainless inserts, they only offer brass, the make up of brass has changed over the years in order to meet epa drinking water standards, the metal does not wear as good and does not have the strength due to removal of certain metals.

Can you provide a part # because Cat can't. They due recommend 2 repair companies who do stainless resleeve , as this is now a common wear problem .
