Coleman Vacuum motor replacement?

Howdy y’all,
This is a Jim Coleman Fresh N Vac combo vacuum and fragrance machine. Currently only vacuum works and with only 1 motor. The Jim Coleman part number is 55114- vacuum motor 1.6 hp 110v. There are no markings from the manufacturer on the motor that I could find. I am assuming I can get a replacement from KleenRite but wanted to know if you guys are upgrading or is there a standard motor that last well. Also, I have read mixed reviews on the fragrance feature being profitable. Does anyone make enough money on that to justify rebuilding the unit?

This is the cheapest motor you'll find. They're not horrible, but if the vac is really busy you'll have to change the brushes at least once a year. If you let them wear all the way down, it will arc and burn the commutator (True with any brush motor) and it's trash.


I use this one. I replace the brushes in all of them every two years, and the motors have never failed. They're quieter and have both more lift and more volume than the above.


You may or may not have some profit from the fragrance, that depends on your customers, but you may not have to rebuild it. You will have to replace the jugs, most of the Coleman units I've worked on have Coke bottles in them. If they always used water-based fragrance, it may just need some hot water run through them. Old or cheap oil-based can separate and leave a thick sludge in the solenoids. I use WD-40 with the machine running and push it through the lines. You might have to take the solenoids apart and clean them, which is pretty easy.

This or the Lamb motor will work fine. Can't believe you have never had to replace one yet.
People at my wash use the air freshener pretty often. It looks like all the parts are there except the lines and most likely the gun and hose. You can get a fragramatics gun and hose and make it work on your Coleman. There is also a company that will make a new front decal for about $50.

We used to use the Lamb Motor VAL6336 https://www.kleen-ritecorp.com/p-49745-lamb-motor-2-stage-1-speed.aspx. But found the 6600-19T vacuum motor to be just as good as the VAL6336. We now use the Kleen-Rite 6600-19T Vacuum Motor https://www.kleen-ritecorp.com/p-581-kleen-rite-6600-19t-vacuum-motor-120v-2-stage-bypass-high-performance-alternate-for-119414-00-and-116336-01.aspx and change the brushes once a year whether they need it or not, normally in September before it gets cold. We also replace the round gasket under the motors as needed and inspect the door gaskets when we clean out the vacuums. One thing most people don’t know is you need to use the same manufacture and model motor in your vacuum because different manufacture motors turn at a different RPM and by using different manufactures motors you’ll have one motor fighting with the other motor.

I have 7 Coleman Fresh N Vacs in Service. Most pats are easy to replace but you need to determine what is not working. Tips I have found. Use a "Coil Wrap" hose protector available from Kleen Rite. Without it hoses rubbing and flexing would last a year or so, now they last years . I only cover from the gun the the center 6 feet. I sue the KR VMK 16 motors . Last a long time. Labor cost to change brushes not worth it since longevity often effected by corrosion - not brush life. Do Not switch to fragrmatic gun and hose - gun is not as durable. I use "Nu Scents" concentrate. You can ad water or I use Windshield washer anti freeze . Depends on your climate. The front display bubbler is garbage. Replace liquid by finding a cheap flashing LED string Making 3 coils from the length leaving connected and stuffing into tubes.

Thanks for the help, I am ordering a few motors to keep on hand. I am going to replace both on this vacuum. Also, I was able to take the solenoid valves apart for the fragrance and get it back up and running without any issues. What type of fragrance should I get, oil or water based?

I prefer oil based even if there's no chance of freezing. Water based doesn't last more than a few minutes in the car. I strongly recommend ordering Fragramatics brand - the cheap ones are more likely to separate in the machine, and the Kleen-Rite oil based smells nothing like what it should.

Per my post above. I use the coil wrap to the gun on Shampoo and Vacs because the hose saver slides down otherwise and the hose wears at the gun. On the Fresh N Vac I only cover the center 6 feet. because the hose saver stays where it should.

Earl, could you provide a link to the coil wrap on KR? I have that same issue and would go ahead and add it to all 12 of my Coleman combos asap. Thanks.

I clean my fragrance lines out with 91% rubbing alcohol. Sometimes you can blow funk out the lines by plugging the orifice on the spray handle with your finger. It will force the air back through the open solenoid and back through the line. Then, draw the alcohol for several cycles.

If you've got a line really clogged you may have to disassemble the fragrance solenoid with a 13mm deep well socket.

Look on EBay I found shorter lengths of the spiral hose guard material there, it's mostly used on hydraulic hoses. .

Thanks for the tips guys! I have another question about the vacuums. How often would you clean the filters and do you scrub the insides of the machines? I was cleaning the machines this morning and started scrubbing them I thought I may be crazy but I hate when there is a bad smell from the vacuums when I have used them at other places. Also, I spent about 5 minutes picking $3 in change out of the trash like a crack head. I guess I will get over that soon and just trash it.

Wash your filters in the bay and let them air dry thoroughly to get rid of the smell. When you clean out your vacuums, open the top door and bang on the bags to remove the loose dirt that is trapped up there. Some people use a brush that looks like a toilet brush to stick inside the filters and brush them out. I don't bother with this. Some people wash their bags on a regular basis, I only wash mine if they smell or if they get wet and dirt builds up inside them that can't be shaken out. Some of my filter bags probably haven't been washed in several Years.

I agree with Greg.
I haven‘t washed my vac bags in years. I beat the bags every month or 2 and clean out the inside and outside of the vacs.
