I have begun treating my exposed metal in the carwash with a product called fluidfilm. http://www.fluid-film.com/
I use it on beams, door springs, shafts, angle iron , hose fittings etc.
Pretty good stuff. I slap it on with a paintbrush. Smells like the business end of a sheep, but seems to work well so far.
Seems every carwash could find a use for it.
Around here, garages sell it as an undercoating/rustproof for cars.
