I have always believed that you could put up a sign in all bays that says, "Free $20 bill. Just ask attendent." You would sit there all day and nobody would ask you.

Yeah, years ago when my family was in the lawn and garden equipment business we had a similar deal. We ran an ad in the local paper for one of our most popular models of self-propelled mower. The rep faxed the ad to me for approval, which I approved. As soon as I opened the paper I noticed that the price was about $100 below our cost, exactly as the proof that I had approved. After I got done crapping my pants I called the rep and had her fix it before the next issue came out. The end result, we didn't get a single inquiry on the mistaken price...makes you wonder how well your advertising dollars are working.

Along the same lines as the $20 bill, is how I get rid of my 55 gallon barrels. Usually, I just set it out front and write "TAKE IT!!!" on the side. Often, people will ask me if it's ok if they take it.

I think I will have some of these made up:
Eric & Earl,

I am also tempted to have this made up to put this by our vacuum area. Maybe add something about cameras. Maybe adding something about discarding tires which cost us because our dumpter pickup adds ... if I remember right $10 for each one ... & they do check for each one.

Maybe adding more to it would spoil the shaming humor which I think would resonate with most of our customers as they are forced to drive by it exiting the car wash.

Do your think there could be some copyright issues with using their hilarious wording or do you think they would just take it as ego boosting flattery & be happy others made use out of their wording?

Another way I've had fun is when replacing some equipment, such as a water softener, the owner asks how we will get rid of the old one. It's simple and works every time. Just set it outside with a sign that says, "Good water softener. $500 or best offer." It will be gone in the morning.

We used to be stocked with 55 gallon drums, cause we could not give them away. Now we put a price of $10 on them, and we have a waiting list to sell them. Like Mac said, you put a value on something and the perception changes. What the heck is wrong with people?
