I try to be reasonable in the way I conduct my life. At least by my standards. I think that my reactions to different situations should all follow the same thought process. Here's an example. The general public looks at smokers as blatently evil people. Their smoking will kill my relatives by second hand smoke, and increase all insurance costs due to smokers getting sick more often. They (smokers) make a voluntary decision to smoke, no one forces them to do it. Well, how about the people who get AIDS? We screen blood supplies now, so that 99.9% of people who get this do so by doing something of their own choosing. They shoot up drugs with the same needle, have unprotected sex with multiple partners, or engage in anal sex. Yet people with AIDS have national campaigns to help them. It's considered chic to wear an AIDS ribbon to show you care. It is a behavorially spread disease. Stop the behavior, stop the disease. What am I missing here?

Here is one for you...Why is it ok to tell a smoker what a horrible person they are and that they are killing themselves, but it is NOT OK to tell a fat person that they are overweight and are increasing their chances of heart disease and diabetes???

Seattleguy, mainly because we started telling the dumb asses that smoke, they were dumb asses before we started worrying about being politically correct.

Now, everyone is a victim, no one is responsible for being a dumb ass, "we will take care of you as long as you vote for us".

Watch Greece and the other broke European countries, as they try to back up from the drop off.

I think most that wear the ribbons are Hollywood types that engage in that type of behavior, and are some of our favorite actors. I don't know if telling anyone about their behavior is worth the breath it comes out of. My father is in stage 4 Lung cancer after quitting for a few years. We told him since i was a little kid to quit. The warnings are quite clear on a pack and going to get bigger more graphic pictures. I think we underestimate the willpower needed to quit. Weak minds are everywhere on almost every addiction possible. Something my father said recently was "I didn't think this would happen to me". I can't believe he thought it was safe behavior, I always thought it would happen to me if i tried it, and still may from all the childhood 2nd hand smoke. I think almost everyone takes for granted good health. That is the only real thing we have in life, because without it we have nothing. I have relatives that ask what kind of cancer my father has, as they choke on a smoke, it is just- in one ear and out the other.

At the risk of being part of a very small minority here I enjoy a good cigar - not nearly as many now as I used to - but I think I have a right to at least have a place where I can go to enjoy one when out in public. I would never dream of lighting up anywhere without asking if anyone objects. I have no problem with non-smoking establishments. What does bother me is that now they are trying to ban smoking even areas inside and outside public buildings altogether. There is a town in California that is even trying to pass a law against smoking in your own home.

San Francisco recently tried to outlaw Happy Meals for kids. They are also in the process of trying to tax overweight people. What next a law against eating? We are slowly but surely being subjected to a loss of individual rights in many areas in this country. While I despise the Civil Liberties Union I am beginning to wonder when all areas of our lives will be subject to government regulations. What happened to the "Land of the Free and Home of the Brave" and the "Pursuit of Happiness"?

While I understand the concept that we have to give up some individual rights for the good of the masses but I think this concept is being stretched beyond the bounds of reason.

IMO, the problem starts with the lack of a decent education. When you are taught that these things/behaviors are bad for you, and you have some common sense, you don't do it. I know fried foods aren't good for you but I do eat some occasionally.

With the government telling you "don't worry, we'll take care of you, just vote for us", and our educational system, just a babysitter, people are doing stupid things. 60% of our population is fat or obese, God, give me a break. At my age losing 5 pounds is a trick, but when you screwed around in school and didn't get an education that qualified you for anything except flipping burgers, eating can be your only pleasure.

Now the government looks around and sees the eminent health issues that they have created and it will be surprising to see what the government tries to do to correct it. What I think you will see is just the actual lack of care provided. If anyone thinks that the new Health care bill, will actually provide you with a better level of care , you have a rude awaking coming. Like every other socialized medical care plan, care is rationed.

Telling fat people what they can or can not eat, probably not, taxing sugar/etc like tobacco and alcohol, probably.

I did see a woman on a news show that weighted probably 350-400 pounds say that she was entitled to a seat in a plane without having to pay for 2 of them. I also saw another fat lady on some show, that said she had had people come up to her and take the food out of her hands/mouth and throw it on the ground.

I don't think that I will do that, they might kick my butt.

Do you think there may be a direct correlation between the growth of Food Stamps and the plague of fat people we have??
