Hydrominder makes several large valves just for filling tanks.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe even 6" which you can get in short pieces from Home Depot. That should be heavy enough to stay in place on its own.

Is there a hose that comes off the Hydrominder and down into the tank? Can you extend it or replace it with a solid pipe with a tee? Post a picture of the setup.

I've had the red ones swell too. Made the mistake of shaving them off, it's just about impossible to get them perfectly flat, and if you remove too much the solenoid won't open anymore.

I use Morton pellets and have never had to clean the tank.

If you're lucky you can get a functioning but underperforming wash for not much more than the value of the land. It takes some work, but if it's neglected but in a good location you can make it nicely profitable without a lot of money put into it.
