dvr camara system

Says it supports up to 2 TB HD. Did you upgrade it? Was it hard to do?
I've worked on a number of DVRs. It's usually easy, but it depends on whether the firmware is in the DVR or on the drive. Some of them (Samsung in particular) don't make it easy to transfer the firmware to a replacement drive. Physically changing the drive is very easy and only requires a Phillips screwdriver.

I noticed two of the Q-See DVRs have identical specs except one had a 500GB drive and one had a 2TB drive. The price difference between them was MORE than the cost of a new 2TB drive.

I have some Q See DVRs that accomodated a second hard drive. As you said easy to do. It was alos easy to drop in a DVD RW where it accomodated them. Sadly, they don't seem to offer this anymore.

I was just wondering if the unit Bill referred to was as easy.

I don't think my latest Q See allowed for a DVD USB RW backup. Do the ones you refer to offer this.

It looks to me that you just add the extra 1T HD, by screwing it and hook up the cables. I have not tried the USB backup, I assume that you stick it in and use the menu to back up.

I am wondering how the change from IPv4 to IPv6 affects our DVRs. When buying a new system do we have to watch out for something? And how is the old hardware going to cope with the change?

Anyone still looking for a DVR system that wants to give Q-See a try, check out this Costco offer while it lasts:

15 cameras, 600 lines res, 5mm lens, IR
1 PTZ camera 1X-3X
1 TB storage

$800 including shipping etc.

I know the cameras are probably throw away, however, I just ordered this same DVR with no cameras for $425. I'm going to try to return it and buy this system. For an extra $375 or $23/camera, you can't beat it. If they last 1 year I'll use them in non critical areas or at other sites to fill out my other systems.

Update, DVR dies, well it doesn't record. Of course no support so looking for a new one.

Bill,

I do not have any first hand experience with this DVR ... but a guy on a laundry BB said he has had good experience this brand. http://www.nightowlsp.com/Videos/DVR-Videos.

We have 2 GE Kalatel's but they seem to be extremely proprietary when it comes to replacing a hard drive or whatever ... maybe GE's newer models are no longer that way ... I am not sure.

Update: Just tried reformating the HDD and its working. So, have no idea why it crashed, but so far so good.

yeah, the zmodo i had i threw away a few months ago after the HDD failed... replaced it with the q-see...

I didn't try formatting the HDD though, that might have been the only problem.

I still like the picture better from the Lorex, but the user interface is 10x better on the Qsee

I purchased this set up over a year ago, http://www.nightowlsp.com/Products/Complete-Kits/LTE-168500
I love it, simple install and I can see all 16 cameras on my Iphone from anywhere. there is probably better quality out there but for a price. After all I am not planing to crack any major cases, only to see if there is any messes in my bays or suspicious activity.

There is a sample:

HCW, glad you posted this. I watched your linked videos on youtube. You know when watching on youtube, there is a number of recommended or related videos to watch on the right of the screen. After watching your vids I clicked on one of those and found this.

Those guys sure looked familar to me so I started looking at some of my old videos. I know it is three years old, but these same guys hit me and now I know who they are. I'm going to see if I can get the law to press charges three years later.

Here is a still of the youtube vid and my vid next to each other. Sure looks like the same guys to me. The third guy is also in my video. Wish me luck in prosecution.

The forum now allows you to post videos (same way you post links) - I'm going to test it now:

Update on my DVR system. The Zmodo system was ok, but the smartphone app was pathetic, and 0 customer service. I managed to blow it up by plugging in an under sized power supply, so I picked up a Qsee QT526. Installation was a snap, the smartphone app worked the first time, watching on the Internet or network worked the first time. I haven't needed customer service but hear it is great. IMO if you don't go with Allen @ Ruggedcctv, then buy a QSee.

I agree with turbo jet, we have two zmodo's, 90 minute wait for cs, the price is great, they work great easy to view over internet and smart phones. cameras are not that good so if you buy one, get just the dvr and cameras somewhere else. we don't use port forwarding, one fixed ip address and the other is not, but it does not change that often so you can just log in to whatsmyipaddress and change it.
