Tip could be eroded and flowing too much, a check valve somewhere could be bad and allowing flow to be lost, high pressure seals could be bad.

If it has a thermal overload, set it to manual. If it stops and doesn't restart until you press the reset, it might be failing or drawing too much current.

It's possible, but I wouldn't do it. It takes a long time for the presoak to reach the gun, and it will be much more complicated and cost more than adding a Procon pump and multiplexer.
