Mike, I don't know. The DVRs have an alarm feature, but I never used it. Even though I have 16 cameras out, there are only 4 alarm outs. Its a relay, so you could try it.

Here is a unit I know nothing about. It has a built in DVD Burner. Costs more.

http://www.surveillance-video.com/epara16d3-1tb.html

here's another

http://www.securitycamerasandmore.com/cnb-hds4848dv-16-channel-h264-240-fps-dvr-dvd-rw.aspx

As far as I know Q See no longer amakes one with this option.
I e-mailed them to ask about it and their reply was that people simply use the Flash Drives.

I have 5 DVR systems in place. All from Costco. Have purchased 6.

4 had the ability to drop in a DVR Burner, which I did. . One of those was stolen during a break in. Thieves either knew where it was or happened to get it.

Periodicaly when I neee a copy of a video, it's easy and cheap to burn 2 DVDs. (One ot give the cops or insurance company and one to keep in a file.)Easy to keep a stack on hand with DVD envelopes. Doesn't take long since you typicaly only need to burn a couple of minutes. Some of my loactions do not have computers with their own DVD burners.

As someone said, USBS are realtively cheap. Still, keeping a stack on hand at each location and sending them out or giving them away annoys me.

So, if I did it again I would likely pay extra for one with the DVD burner.

Someone mentioned plugging a DVD Burer into the USB backup port in the DVR, but I don't think the DVR software and DVD burner software allow this marriage. It's not like a computer where you can take the CD that comes with the burner and load it into the DVR.

I only save stuff if something happens. As I said. Some don't care whether it's USB only or DVD and USB capable.

For me the cost of 5 boxes of DVD (One for each place) is a lot simpler and cheaper to keep on hand than 4 or so USBs per location.

This just came up on Costco.com today. I think I am going to upgrade one of my systems. Add a couple new cameras and reuse some of the old ones...

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Produc...11612358&ec=BC-EC877-CatHome&pos=8&lang=en-US
I have a couple of these. Work well. The cameras it comes with do not have a mounting that s as easily adjustable as some others.
It basicaly points straight ahead with up and down adjustment. However this unit allows for further refinement of these cameras from the unit. Kind of like pan and tilt but very slow and little range, so it's really just used for small adjustments.
Backup thru USB port only.

I immediatedly noticed a better picture with these 600l cameras vs the 420 that came with other units.

I carry a USB on my key chain with docs and frequently used files.... if something happens somewhere I download it to that stick, then email the files to the Law Enforcement officers... most of the LEO's in my area have business cards with email addresses...

I think I’ll order a couple of these Costco systems. All my neighbors around me have camera systems on the outside of their homes.

How well do you get along with your neighbors? Maybe you could get them to point a few cameras your way and save you a few bucks! :D

My wife wanted a system for the house, but I told her we need to frame the Siloette we used to qualify for our conceal and carry and mount it to the front of our house. That would probably work better as a deterant! She didn't like that idea!

Bill & others,

Do you think that process would be reliable enough to also use to trigger as an actual alarm to replace dedicated motion detectors. It seems like a main alarm control such as a PLC that was programmable so it could be programmed to require more than one trigger would prevent any false alarms. My Kalatel DVRs have 16 alarm contact outputs on the rear that we have been tempted to use as a replacement for infrared &/or ultrasound motion detectors.

mike
I thought about this 5 years ago but then I thankfully decided not to do it. I have both: alarm system and camera system and I intend to keep it that way. I believe it is too unreliable. To trigger an alarm you firstly rely on the camera, the illumination at the time, the adjustments after a windy day and in case of a pc based system: on Microsoft, on the DVR software, on the Internet and then on yourself receiving the alarm.

A dedicated alarm system and a monitoring company you double up, it is much more stable, more reliable. I let my camera system count my customers: It is not as accurate as a separate counter.

I like the sign!

All joking aside....I have a huge sign right above my changer that says the CW is protected by video surveillance. Its amazing how many "Hoody" thugs walk up to the changer in the middle of the night, see the sign, look up at the cameras, then hide their face and walk/run off...The signs are just as much a deterant.

FWIW While I bought Camera Systems thru Costco i bought cables, connectors etc. Generaly Thr Amazon. Also note that the systems support audio but the included cameras do not. You need different camera and cable for this.

Like most computers, if you use a monitor without built in speakers you will need speakers that have their own power source. Cheap computer speakers work fine.

Keep in mind though that recording audio without their knowledge or consent is illegal.

I thought all of us had signs posted prominently in all our pertinent places within our facilities that read "Audio is Recorded for Quality Control"

Some people have been known to request recording on some phone calls as long as statements are not allowed to be taken out of context.

i got a quote the other day he quote me for 15 camaras unit for $16.000
that is very expensive
$16,000 is about right for a Commercial 15 camera system. The key word is “Commercial” I have to laugh at some of the car wash operators with a quarter mentality who don’t fully understand the difference between “Commercial” and “Residential”. The Costco system is a wonderful system if you’re looking for a play thing. I’ve got a Costco system installed at my beach house and it works OK.

In Illinois there is a statute that says it is illegal ---period. Statute is currently being litigated with the appeal decision pending.

All my signs stae that the premises is subject to video and Audio recording.

Is that "Quarter as opposed to "Dollar Coin" :)

Please elaborate.

What are the specifications of the commercial systems not available in the lesser systems?
